New Mexico Corrections Training Academy
The New Mexico Corrections Training Academy (NMCTA), located at the New Mexico Corrections Department’s (NMCD) Central Office Complex in Santa Fe, was the first corrections training academy in the nation to earn accreditation from the American Correctional Association.
NMCTA’s primary mission is to train, certify, and develop all Corrections Officers and Probation and Parole Officers for the State of New Mexico. The Academy also provides advanced training for current NMCD staff and supports local law enforcement agencies and other state entities with their training needs.
To keep pace with the evolving demands of corrections, NMCTA continues to modernize its training programs by incorporating best practices from across the country, expanding e-learning opportunities, and integrating curriculum from the New Mexico State Personnel Office and the National Institute of Corrections. The Academy also offers a Certification by Waiver program, which recognizes prior training for correctional and detention officers. Through this program, eligible officers complete a three-week course and, upon passing the certification exam, receive state certification.
NMCTA’s Advanced Training Program is designed to strengthen leadership development, support continuity of operations, improve employee retention, and aid in succession planning. Advanced training also emphasizes instructor development to expand the department’s statewide instructor cadre and enhance the Field Training Officer program to better support new officers in the field.
NMCTA remains committed to delivering relevant, high-quality training for both new and seasoned staff, while working to grow academy enrollment and prepare officers for service in New Mexico’s prisons and communities.
NMCD also maintains a strong statewide recruiting presence by participating in job fairs and community outreach events. The department works closely with military and veteran groups and has partnered with multiple state agencies, including Workforce Solutions and the Department of Public Safety.
NMCTA Instructors
Instructors at the New Mexico Corrections Training Academy (NMCTA) bring a wide-range of experience and education in the subject areas that they teach. All instructors have completed a training-for-trainers instructor certification course and have real-world experience working in prison facilities and/or in the community. Many have college degrees, some having advanced degrees, and each instructor holds specialized certifications related to the topics that they teach. Five NMCTA instructors are certified as master level instructors in the areas of defensive tactics, use of force, firearms, TASER, and First Aid/CPR. Some instructors also bring military and law enforcement experience to the academy. NMCTA Instructors are continually working to improve their knowledge and skills while also actively supporting adjunct instructors throughout the department.
