
Secretary Gregg Marcantel
Cabinet Secretary Gregg Marcantel, a United States Marine Corps (USMC) veteran, is also a law enforcement veteran of over 30 years. Before his appointment to the New Mexico Corrections Department in November 2011, Secretary Marcantel was appointed as Deputy Cabinet Secretary at the Department of Public Safety (DPS) in May 2011. Before his appointment to DPS he retired from the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department (BCSD) as a Captain/Division Commander. His executive roles with the BCSD included oversight and management of the agency's personnel and capital resources, ranging from the investigative functions of complex major crimes to field level services and the department's training and professional standards. Secretary Marcantel's technical and management career has required extensive research and experience in a host of complex law enforcement leadership topics involving strategic and tactical planning, as well as criminal justice collaborations aimed at improving the effectiveness and efficiency of public safety initiatives and services. Likewise, he has worked extensively with local and national media outlets to assure accurate and appropriate public dissemination of both educational and critical public safety information associated with police operations.
During Secretary Marcantel's career, he successfully completed the Federal Bureau of Investigation's (FBI) National Academy and has served as the President of the New Mexico FBI National Academy Associates. He also attended the Bramshill Police Staff College in the United Kingdom where he studied the leadership and management of serious and serial crimes. He possesses a Master of Science Degree in Forensic and Legal Psychology from the University of Leicester and a Bachelor Degree in Criminal Justice from Chaminade University of Honolulu. Additionally Gregg holds membership in both the Law Enforcement Executive Development Association (LEEDA) and the International Law Enforcement Planners Association (ILEPA).
Secretary Marcantel also serves on the Executive Briefing Committee of the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF), where he holds the appropriate security clearances with the Department of Justice to serve as a partnering executive in the development of security planning relating to the threat of both international and domestic terrorism threats for the State of New Mexico.
Throughout his public safety career, Gregg has received numerous awards ranging from the Navy Achievement Medal in the USMC to national recognition by the Department of Justice and the Drug Enforcement Administration, to include receipt of the Nation's Top Cop Award by the National Association of Police Organizations in Washington D.C. He has presented both nationally and internationally on a host of complex criminal investigation strategies and serves Wayland Baptist University as an adjunct faculty member where he instructs on a variety of criminal justice topics to include Criminal Investigations, Behavior-based Rape Investigations, Murder; an Analytical Study, Police Supervision and Management, as well as Forensic Psychology. |
