Volunteer Services and Faith-Based Programs Crossings Living Unit / Meditation / Addiction / Education / Recreation / Mentor / The New Mexico Corrections Department appreciates the hard work and dedication of our volunteers. We recognize the priority of our volunteers having access to relevant training materials that will assist them serve with confidence in the prisons and that will also assist them in the recruitment of friends who are interested in becoming volunteers. Furthermore, our revised volunteer handbook is provided as a training resource to fulfill our goal of providing standardized training materials for all of our state prison volunteers.
We appreciate your investment in the lives of the men and women in our prisons and trust that the handbook will be a resource that you can use as a handy reference guide. Feel free to make copies as needed. (* Our thanks to Ken Tremko for his contributions to the updated handbook.) Our goal is to encourage these men and women to become involved in similar programming in the local community upon release from prison. As they begin to be involved in a local faith community, they will be encouraged to remain free from the criminal activity and bring satisfying relationships to themselves and their families. There are several units in operation at the present time by Crossings Inc a non-profit, volunteer based corporation. Volunteers are staffing the programs four nights a week. For information concerning volunteer opportunities please contact the Director of Faith-based Programming (505) 382-6917.
Meditation Volunteers Prisoners have three options for dealing with the feelings of anger and frustration that led to their incarceration. They can continue to act them out violently, repress them with drugs or alcohol, or learn to understand and manage those feelings, while learning positive skills. Meditation effectively provides this third alternative for our inmates.
Addiction Services Volunteers Inmates who have issues with substance abuse are encouraged to attend regular AA, NA or 12 step meetings. These in-house meetings are led by both inmates and outside volunteers from the AA NA community. Also they are to seek sponsorship where available and continuity of care relevant to their in-house programming upon release.
Education Volunteers The Education Bureau attempts to assess and remedy educational, vocational, life skills, and cognitive barriers which may prevent inmates from enjoying a successful transition from prison to the community, family, and work-place.
Recreation Volunteers Physical activity is an essential health practice for all people. This is especially true for inmates who without guidance and motivation could retire into a sedentary lifestyle.
Catholic Mentor Project Thresholds Reintegration Mentoring Mission Statement Project Thresholds is a special project sponsored by the Archdiocese of Santa Fe, which aims to assist a small, select group of non-violent inmates in the transition from prison to families and communities. Project Thresholds aims to help our "mentees" become productive, happy, healthy, Christian members of our community. Description Volunteers from our church communities work together on mentor teams (usually 2-3 people on a team) to offer guidance and encouragement to men and women that have been involved in rehabilitation programs in the prison and are sincerely trying to make positive changes in their lives. This is a holistic program where we help them set and stay focused on goals in different areas of their lives (i.e. family, employment, housing, education, spiritual, social, health, recovery, self esteem, etc.). Mentors receive training from the Archdiocese of Santa Fe and the New Mexico Corrections Department as well as ongoing support and personal growth opportunities. The pilot project started in Albuquerque. The first mentor team of men started working with a male offender in July of 2001 and the first mentor team of women started working with a female offender in August of 2001. We have about 60 volunteers from our church communities in Albuquerque working together on mentor teams assisting non-violent offenders in the transition from prison to families and communities. Project Thresholds is expanding to Santa Fe and has also begun in the Diocese of Las Cruces.
